Today France is celebrating ... not the very poor football match that our team produced yesterday at the World cup, but we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the "Appeal of June 18th". This "appeal" is a famous speech by the General de Gaulle that he pronounced on the BBC radio in 1940 in order to call French for resistance to the German army. You can read the speech translation on wikipedia.
This stature is the one you find on the Champs Elysées.

ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law tells stories of the war when she was a child and how they had to flee Coussey and how her father was taken and imprisoned. He escaped the camp and WALKED about 100 km. back home. The old house in Coussey still has German bullet holes. Her younger brother is named for an American soldier who was kind to the family.
